I want to say thank you to everyone who contributed to Breaking Boundaries ’10. Just prior to our departure on February 19th, we raised $2,430 – enough to cover air fare, conference fees (both Poly Living and PLN), and a hotel room for Ashe, Mai Li, Randy, and Ranger. I pitched in for the business cards (VistaPrint rocks!). The only out of pocket costs at the event were food, transportation between the airport and hotel, and the logo’d t-shirts.
Coordinating the trip to Poly Living and the PLN summit has been an all-consuming project for me since we first brainstormed the idea back in late December. I knew that cost was going to be an issue, but I felt that there would be value in everyone attending and seeing the “big picture”. A lot of time was spent crunching the numbers, brainstorming fundraiser ideas, watching the cost of flights fluctuate, and figuring out contingency plans for if we weren’t able to meet our goal. I rode the emotional roller coaster; feeling the highs and lows at different points in the fundraising cycle, and at times wondering if I placed our hopes too high.
The next thing I knew, it was February 19th. The weekend felt surreal.
On the phone and over the internet, our team worked well together. When everyone finally met face to face, the team became cohesive. At times, it looked as solid as a friendship between siblings. Through moments of joy and sadness, we were there for each other.
I was glad to see David at the conference. He was an awesome part of our initial team, and I was sad to see him pulled into other projects. I regret not keeping in touch with him as much as I should have, and was glad to reconnect with him briefly during one of the less hectic periods. He’s doing a lot of good for Loving More right now, and I look forward to future collaborative projects between them and Modern Poly.
It’s been an awesome and inspiring 6 months. I felt awed to the point of near-tears several times during the summit proper. When I hosted my teleconference six months ago – the catalyst that started this whole thing – I would have never expected the results.
I will admit that at first I was hesitant. We were the new kids on the block; the fast-risers. To some, our presence could have been intimidating. Instead, we found ourselves welcome and respected.
Many thanks to everyone that made this happen – to Robyn and Reid for coordinating the conference and summit. To Minx for giving us the awesome press. To all those that donated funds. We hope to keep making you all proud.
Here we are – the day after. It’s hard for any of us to stay focused given all of the cool ideas for “what’s next” that are floating in our heads. We've already started a brainstorming discussion of what we as a group want to accomplish next.
As for right now, I'm going to play Fable 2. :p
