Advocate for the rights of polyamourous families and individuals
While we do not see the legalization of plural marriage as a realistic goal in the near future there are many places in current law where the legal rights and protections of the non-monogamous community can be improved. These include divorce law, child custody law, workplace discrimination and military regulations and service. We are devoted to advocate for the improvements of these situations and to assist individuals who are adversely affected by the laws in their current form.
Building Poly-Movement Related Infrastructure
Modern Poly designs and builds websites that empower polyamorous and non-monogamous individuals to organize with their community: locally, nationally, and abroad. Our web-based projects provide support for:
- Finding a local community
- Organizing events
- Exchanging ideas related to current relevant issues
Being organized is essential to any marginalized subculture in building an increased sense of unity & normalcy through connecting like-minded community.
This activity has been ongoing since August 2009 with the creation of ModernPoly.com, and continues to expand with the creation of a group directory, the web presence for the Polyamory Leadership Network, and future planned projects including a directory of poly related items and services and a volunteer coordination site.
Providing a Platform for the Expression of Ideas
We create and curate an online magazine in which anyone who identifies as polyamourous or non-monogamous is invited to submit articles for publication. Writers include ModernPoly staff as well as repeat contributors who are not officers or board members, and one-time contributors of relevent content. Giving voice to the evolving ideas of the movement is critical in fostering the cultural discussion and growth around practicing a style of relationships that is not widely practiced or known.
In addition to hosting original content we also manage a blog aggregation that promotes and highlights those posting content about polyamory and non-monogamy from across the web.
Assisting, Role Modeling, & Teaching Other Organizations
Modern Poly uses organizing methods that are both innovative and technologically cutting edge. We leave an open invitation to teach and/or assist organizations in their efforts when goals align. By helping fellow organizers and leaders become more successful in their own projects, we will in turn be helping the polyamory movement. This commitment takes up a significant portion of our time as an organization.
Examples of this in action include assisting Atlanta Polyamory in strategic & content planning and referrals for the first Atlanta Poly Weekend in December & January 2010-2011 (the event was March 2011); and collaborating with Loving More on the creation of Poly House Party Weekend in all planning stages, from inception in October 2010 to execution in June 2011.
